Gist: Since we are all in lockdown we have plenty of time to binge watch shows, and that’s why I’m going to start off by reviewing a TV show called 'the office'.
This show is a mockumentary on a group of typical office employees, where the workday consists of ego clashes, inappropriate behavior and lots of pranks.
Description: 'The office' is quite different compared to any other comedy shows that we generally see. This is the American version of the British sitcom also called the office which comprised only of 2 seasons whereas this one comprises of 9 seasons. A small disclaimer: the 1st season has only 6 episodes and you might find it slightly boring, but be patient with it and by the time reach the 2nd season, the show starts to pick up and it will definitely entertain you.
The golden globe winner Steve Carell is one of the stars of this unique TV show alongside John Krasiniski, Jenna Fischer, Rainn Wilson and many more.
Michael Scott (Steve Carell) -
Michael Scott always had to be the belle of the ball, the center of attention. Steve Carell’s greatest role that of Michael Scott was filled with such complexity. On the surface, the boss of all the employees of the Dunder Mifflin paper company was a two-dimensional imbecile; racist, a kind of homophobic, chauvinistic, and culturally tactless. Now I know this will make him sound terrible but trust me once you get attached you will never feel to let go. He is one of the most iconic characters NBC has ever had. In case you didn’t know the famous line “That’s what she said”, is a Michael Scott dialogue.
Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) -
Jim is just a simple minded, salesman who sells paper at Dunder Mifflin but he is charming, and not in a creepy way. Jim is a great guy: funny, kind, mild-mannered. He's just looking for the right girl. Problem is, he’s already found her (Pam), and she’s with someone else lol which is quiet visible in the first season itself. But the best trait that he has are his pranking skills, the rivalry between him and his fellow colleague Dwight Shrute is just is so fun to watch and is absolutely hilarious.
Dwight Shrute (Rainn Wilson) -
He is one of the highest-ranking salesmen as well as assistant to the regional manager which is a totally made up post and does not have any additional pay to it. He is notorious for his lack of social skills and common sense, his love for martial arts and the justice system, and his office rivalry with Jim Halpert is super entertaining. The main reason they both are rivals is because it’s Dwight’s dream to become the next “Michael” aka the next manager of their branch but he knows that Jim also has the very potential required to become the manager (which is obviously not what Dwight wants). He also has very weird obsession with killing farm animals for meat and apparently he’s really good at it.
Pam Beesley (Jenna Fischer) -
Pam Beesly is known for her shyness, sensitivity, and artistic inclinations. A dedicated and warm protector always ready to defend her loved ones. This is most obvious in her relationship with Jim. Over the span of a few seasons, Pam’s character develops from the humble receptionist to a more assertive employee. Pam’s responsibilities include but are not limited to: keeping Michael in check and assisting Jim in his pranks on Dwight. Although generally unenthusiastic about her job, her cheerful demeanor makes up for it.
The Office is directed by Greg Daniels. This show was filmed with a single-camera setup in a different style to create the look of an actual documentary, with no studio audience or laugh track, allowing its "absurd" humor to fully come across. The reason showed in the series that a camera crew was filming Dunder Mifflin and its employees were that they were trying to film a documentary on an American workplace for which they chose their company. The presence of the camera is acknowledged by the characters, especially Michael Scott, who enthusiastically participates in the filming. The characters, especially Jim and Pam, also look towards the camera and make and expression on their faces like “oh god!” when Michael creates an awkward situation.
This show has won 7 Emmy Awards, 2 Academy Awards and 4 Golden Globes for its portrayal of a simple and decent American workplace.
I absolutely recommend this show, please take out the time to watch it!
